Experience travelling slowly in Scotland

Take your time and discover your own Scotland

Scotland has consistently been voted the most beautiful country globally, and we promise we’re not biased when we say we couldn’t agree more. Here at Alba Campers, we know Scotland’s beautiful and sublime landscapes almost as well as we know our beloved campervans.

That is why we want to encourage our guests to take their trips in Scotland at a slower pace, truly submerging themselves in authentic, local Scottish culture.

cherish the smaller, more meaningful experiences on your trip

Our time off work can often seem like it flies by in the blink of an eye, but this happens because we are busy filling up our schedules with attractions and famous tourist spots and everything in between. Slow travel is somewhat a new idea in the travel-verse and to travel slowly is not exactly about the speed the speedometer reads. Instead, slow travel is a much more meaningful way to travel than what we may be used to.

Rather than chasing the big things, slow travel is about cherishing the smaller, more meaningful experiences on your trip: the journey, the destination and the people you meet along the way. These personal and unique experiences you make are the things you will remember and think back on with a smile. Thus making your Campervan Road Trip around Scotland a holiday you will always remember fondly.

Here are a few ways you can slow down on your campervan roadtrip

Embrace the simple things, it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the bright lights of Scotland’s cities, but sometimes it’s good to just take it easy. You are on holiday, after all!

Instead, think about venturing out into the Scottish countryside and enjoy the simpler things in life; cycling a bike, taking a walk down by a loch, going for an outdoor swim, or even just pulling up your campervan to watch the sunset over a glen. When the sun does go down, be sure to look up to the night sky from the warmth of your campervan. With very low light pollution in the Scottish countryside you will be mesmerised by the twinkling stars. You also have a good chance of witnessing the natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis in Scotland!

Take time to enjoy the journey

It can be challenging to enjoy the journey when you’re constantly anticipating your next stop. Instead, take your time to enjoy the trip – it might be cliché, but it’s not all about getting from A to B. Remember, it’s not the destination that matters but the journey.

So, take your time, do some wildlife spotting, and if you see somewhere, you might like to stop – then do it and soak up all your surroundings.

Seek out new experiences

You’ve taken the first big step to your slow travel experience of Scotland by hiring a campervan, but the exploration shouldn’t stop there. Scotland is famous for its outdoor playground, and there’s an activity for everyone. Whether that’s scaling Ben Nevis, trying out some watersports or taking a woodland walk.

Why not try some local produce and immerse yourself in the local culture? Scotland has plenty of hearty fish and chip shops and seafood restaurants waiting for you. Scotland is also famous for its Whisky and you will find many Whisky distilleries throughout your trip, which is a fantastic little break from driving and also makes for an ideal place to pick up a souvenir for friends or family back home.

Slowing down can be even more fun

Travelling slowly and taking your time does not mean you will have less fun. We think you can actually have a more enjoyable, relaxed time by slowing down around your Scottish road trip. Those of you lucky enough to be aged under 25 can also still have a fun filled holiday in Scotland in one of our Campervans. We offer drivers insurance cover included in the cost as standard to drivers aged 21 and over. So there is no need to rush, take in and experience all that Scotland has to offer during your road trip. You will also be glad to know that we do not expect you to hurry back on your last day of the trip. We offer flexible pick-up and return times, so you can still take your time and maybe get one last memorable experience ticked off before returning your campervan back in the evening.
