IS THE NORTH COAST 500 SUITABLE FOR CAMPERVANS?
Yes the North Coast 500 is very popular with campervan travellers, and a compact campervan is a great way to explore the route.
Some parts of the NC500 use narrow single-track roads, so drivers should be comfortable using passing places and reversing when necessary. Never park in a passing place, and allow faster traffic to pass safely.
Larger motorhomes require extra care on certain sections of the route. The official NC500 guidance advises larger vehicles to avoid roads such as Bealach na Bà and the B869 Drumbeg Road and use the recommended alternatives instead.
The compact size of Alba’s campervans makes them particularly well suited to touring Scotland compared with much larger motorhomes.

Planning Your North Coast 500 Route
The NC500 forms a spectacular loop around the northern Highlands, beginning and ending in Inverness and passing destinations including John O’Groats, Durness, Ullapool and Applecross.
We have a separate detailed guide covering the route, maps, recommended stops, travel times and our extended route from Edinburgh.

Responsible Campervan Travel on the NC500
The NC500 passes through small Highland communities, so responsible driving, parking and overnight stays are important.
Use passing places correctly, allow local traffic to pass, dispose of rubbish and waste responsibly and use campsites or permitted overnight locations where appropriate.
Scottish outdoor access rights do not give motor vehicles an automatic right to park or camp anywhere, so always follow local signs and restrictions.
