Travelling by Motorhome or Campervan is a great way to see everything Scotland has to offer while touring famous tourist routes and trails along the way. Motorhoming or Campervanning is an easy way to plan where you want to go and move on whenever you wish.
With help from VisitScotland, we want to share some top tips and guidelines you should keep in mind for your motorhome adventures around Scotland.
Road Safety
You must follow the rules, etiquette and regulations of the road to ensure your safety and the safety of other road users. Be aware of how long and wide your motorhome is and, if you’re not used to driving a large vehicle, please take extra precautions.
Choose roads that will be wide enough for you to drive. If you find there is traffic behind you, allow others to overtake you.
Drive on the Left Hand side of the road in Scotland
If you are on holiday in Scotland you may be accustomed to driving on the Right Hand side of the road in your home country. Not only are you driving on the opposite side of the road in Scotland, you’re also driving on the opposite side of the car. So you will be glad to know all of our Campervans and Motorhomes are Automatic Transmission as changing gears with your opposite hand that your accustomed to can be very confusing.
WATCH OUT FOR ANIMALS crossing the road
Here in Scotland, there are animals everywhere! The most common animals you will encounter on the side of the road is sheep, cows and occasionally deer. Remain vigilant while driving near animals as it is not uncommon in more rural areas the sheep are free to roam. The Scottish Highlands also have their own special type of cow, the hairy Highland Cow (or heilan coo) with its long reddish hair and its very long horns. Of course you’ll want to keep an eye out for the famous Loch Ness Monster.

Scotland is picturesque, even when you’re in the middle of nowhere and miles away from the nearest tourist attraction. Remember It is illegal to hold your phone while driving in Scotland, so don’t forget to stop safely to take your photographs. Pull over in a safe place and take a look around, stretch your legs and shoot some photos of the beautiful scenery provided by Scotland.
Weather in Scotland during your road trip
One of the most surprising things about Scotland’s climate is how different it can be from one region to another and how quickly the weather can change! Scotland is lush with green, and that green happens because there’s water, lots of water. It comes down from the sky in the form of rain, hail, and snow. While Scotland’s weather can be a little wet, it is also beautiful as long as you’re prepared.
Scotland’s weather can make for hazardous driving conditions, so please take care in the case of heavy rain, gale-force winds, snow and ice.

Planning ahead
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Scotland, it is advised that you use official campsites and holiday parks.
There are many scenic and coastal sites to choose from, including docks for your Campervan and facilities. It’s always good to check what’s open before you book in line with the COVID-19 recovery phases.
If you are intending to stay in the Loch Lomond & Trossachs, make sure to purchase a motorhome permit online before you travel.

Don’t light bonfires or barbeques as these can easily get out of control and, make sure to take extra care around natural hazards. We supply you with a portable Gas Stove which is much safer and more efficient for cooking than a fire.
If you have waste to be disposed of, campsites will have general waste and recycling facilities where you can manage this.
Respect your surroundings
Plan ahead, check the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, leave no trace and dispose of waste correctly. Remember, you should leave no trace and take only many loving memories.
