History of The Celtic Challenge
In 1989 the Scottish Pétanque Association accepted an invitation to play Wales in Cardiff, Scotland won. The return match was held in Stirling in 1990 and following a request from Northern Ireland to be included, the Celtic Challenge was formed.
In 1991 the Irish Pétanque Association was formed and the third Celtic Challenge was held at Clandboyne, Northern Ireland.
Strong competition coupled with a social and friendly atmosphere combines to make the Celtic Challenge one of the highlights of the pétanque calendar.

How To Play Petanque?
The game can be played by 2 teams of 1, 2 or 3 players in each team, teams of 1 or 2 can use 3 boules per player. Teams of 3 will only use 2 boules per player.
You can toss a coin to decide which team will start. One player from the starting team will choose the starting location and mark a circle from where the boules are to be thrown from.
The starting player then throws the ‘Jack’ or ‘Cochonnet’ between 6 to 10 meters away and then throws the first boule as close as they can to the target location.
A player from the opposing team then throws there first boule, attempting to be closer to the Jack than the opposing team. The boule which is closest to the Jack leads.
The team which is not leading then must continue to throw there boules until they can become closest to the Jack, by either throwing there boule closest or knocking the opponents boule further away.
Once both teams have thrown all there boules, the end can be scored. The leading team will gain 1 point for every boule closer to the jack than the oppositions closest boule.
The team that won the previous end will start the proceedings again, until one team has reached 13 points.
